The video is said to dispel the myths about paper and forestry.
The short film said that “claims about saving trees create a false impression that […] forests are being destroyed”, and that sustainable forest management replenishes the renewable source every year in North America. The company said that people value paper, and when given a choice 81 percent would rather read print on paper than on screen, while 15 percent of America are not even online, and that includes 39 percent of senior citizens and 24 percent of rural dwellers.
It was also noted that 34 percent of people print off e-statements at home or in the office, and the company said that 56 percent said printed is easier to read and better for archiving, while 64 percent said that they would not chose a company that did not send a paper bill. Two Sides said that “misleading environmental claims about print and paper are deceiving and damaging to the livelihoods of millions of people” and in the US and Canada paper, print and mail chains support eight million jobs with annual revenues of $1.4 trillion (€1.3 trillion) from forestry, printing, graphic design and mail companies.
Alan Anglyn, Director of IT Care and Billing Services at Spirit, said: “One of the benefits of our relationship with Two Sides has been the opportunity to reflect on how we communicate our efforts. This caused us to review Spirit’s messaging about electronic media across multiple touch points.”
Since 2008, over 165 companies have removed their ‘go paperless-go green’ and ‘save trees’ environmental claims as a result of Two Sides’ global anti-green wish campaign. Two Sides’ mission is to “promote the sustainability of the graphics communications industry and dispel common environmental misconceptions by providing users with verifiable information on why print and paper is an attractive, practical and sustainable communication medium”.
